How We Grow

Sustainability and environmental awareness are key to our farming methodology. In line with these goals, we are a USDA Certified Organic farm.

We see our farm as part of the surrounding eco-system, so work with the goal of keeping our crops happy by encouraging a healthy balance between what we are growing and the naturally-occurring plants, animals, and insects around
us. We never use chemical pesticides and focus on preventative methods to stop problems before they happen rather than reacting to them once they do. We see healthy soil as key to healthy plants.

Among other techniques, we grow a diverse variety of crops and rotate our crops to new beds every year to help break up pest, disease, and weed cycles and to balance nutrients in the soil. We incorporate compost every year to help build soil tilth and organic matter. We use cover crops to improve soil structure, prevent erosion, enhance water flow, and improve soil organic matter. We include flowers in our rotation to help attract beneficial insects and birds that can help naturally control pest populations. We use tarps to control weeds and row cover to keep out pests.

In order to extend our growing season, we use both our 960-square-foot greenhouse as well as row cover to keep crops warm in the early spring and late fall.

We believe that the best food is produced when farmers are in as close contact with the plants as possible.  As a result, our farm is primarily hand-managed. We use tools such as broadforks, hoes, rakes, shovels, and wheelbarrows rather than a tractor. Our most important tools are our own hands, eyes, and ears. While we do our utmost to minimize our use of machinery in order to prevent soil compaction and fossil fuel emissions, we do use a lawn mower to manage weeds in pathways as well as a BCS walk-behind tractor to manage cover crops and for some initial tillage.

We love what we do and believe that you will see our dedication in everything we grow!
